SACHS NAMED NEW BETHANY MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
Andrews Sachs
has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Bethany. Sachs replaces Mike Summey, who stepped down in early June to become the director of basketball operations at the University of Miami (Fla.). Sachs has served as Ralph Willard’s assistant at Division I Holy Cross for the past five seasons. During that span, the Crusaders appeared in four Patriot League Championship games, averaged over 20 wins per year, won two regular season titles in 2005 and 2007 and won the Patriot League Tournament in 2007 to receive an NCAA Tournament bid.

PAC PLACES 300 ON SPRING 2009 ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
A total of 300 student-athletes have been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll for the Spring 2009 semester. To be eligible for the Honor Roll, student-athletes must post a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.6 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) during their season of competition.

GROVE CITY'S DWYER NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Grove City College senior tennis player Jeremy Dwyer earned Men's At-Large College Division Second Team Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ESPN The Magazine on Tuesday, June 9. It is Dwyer's second career Academic All-America citation. In 2008, he earned Third Team Academic All-America. This year, Dwyer won Presidents' Athletic Conference titles at fourth singles and third doubles. He finished his career with 52 singles wins and 39 doubles victories. His career record is 91-20 overall.

FOUR FROM PAC EARN ESPN XC/T&F ACADEMIC HONORS
Four PAC student-athletes have been honored with selection to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II College Division Cross Country/Track & Field teams for men and women, released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on June 4. On the women's side, Waynesburg senior Megan Grover (3.95 grade-point average, biology/pre-dental) was a first team selection, while second team honors went to Grove City senior Julia Seward (3.96, English) and Bethany junior Jodi Bodo (3.87, communication). The lone men's honoree on the first team was junior Derek Kruse (3.96, biology) of Grove City. Both Grover and Kruse now advance to the Academic All-America ballot.

BETHANY TABS ABEL AS NEW CROSS COUNTRY/T&F COACH
Matt Abel
has been selected as the new head men’s and women’s cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at Bethany College. Abel is a former collegiate standout at Wheeling Jesuit who most recently was a Wheeling Park High School assistant coach.

THOMAS MORE COLLEGE TO ADD TRACK & FIELD PROGRAM
Thomas More College Director of Athletics Terry Connor announced on May 28 that the College will add men’s and women’s track & field to the school’s athletic department. The two teams will compete on the club level during the 2009-2010 academic year and the College will look at elevating the teams to varsity status the following year. When the teams are elevated to varsity status it will bring the number of total intercollegiate sports at Thomas More to 16.

W&J GOLF DUO NAMED ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLARS
Washington & Jefferson College seniors Joe Caveney and Marc Fillari were both recently announced as Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Men’s Golf Scholars. A total of 42 Division III men’s golfers were selected to the team which recognizes juniors or seniors who maintained a stroke average under 79.0 and a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average. 

W&J's SCHULTZ NAMED SOFTBALL ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Washington & Jefferson College senior first baseman Valerie Schultz has been selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Softball Second Team, released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 27. Schultz, who recently graduated with a 3.90 grade-point average with degrees in mathematics and accounting, is the 22nd Academic All-American in W&J history.

PAC CONTINGENT EARNS BB/SB HONORS FROM ECAC
Several PAC baseball and softball standouts have been honored with selection to the 2009 ECAC Division III South All-Star Teams for baseball and softball, respectively, which were released on May 27. In baseball, three PAC players were first team selections: Westminster senior 1B John Izzo, Waynesburg junior 2B Wes White Jr., and Grove City sophomore C Marcus Magister. Second team recognition went to Waynesburg freshman OF Rob Cool Jr., while W&J mentor Jeff Mountain was tabbed as Coach of the Year. For softball, earning second team laurels was Bethany junior C Bridgette Fauth and Grove City junior 2B Amy Fisher.

TMC'S FISHBURN TABBED AS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Thomas More College junior shortstop Chris Fishburn has been selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Baseball Third Team, released on May 26 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Fishburn, a sports and entertainment marketing major, carries a cumulative 3.98 grade point average and is the first TMC baseball player to be named an Academic All-American since Noah Welte in 2005. 

TOMCAT TRIO EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS, BAUMGARD 12TH IN HIGH JUMP ON DAY 3 AT NCAA T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS
The final day of competition at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, concluded on May 23. Thiel College saw all three of its runners earn All-America honors with top eight performances. Junior Alex Eaton paced the Tomcats by placing second in the 400 meter dash with a school-record time of 47.56. Senior teammate Dorran Coley earned his fourth consecutive A-A honor in the 110 meter high hurdles after finishing sixth in 14.60. Finally, the Tomcat women were paced by Cara Riffe, who came in sixth in the 400 meter dash in 56.47. Washington & Jefferson was represented at nationals by senior Summer Baumgard, who placed 12th with a personal-best mark of 5-2 1/2.

THREE TOMCAT RUNNERS ADVANCE TO FINALS AT NCAAs
Three Thiel College runners each advanced to the finals in their respective events on day two of the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio on May 22. Thiel senior Dorran Coley advanced to the 110 meter high hurdle finals for the fourth time in his career with a prelim time of 14.55. His junior teammate, Alex Eaton, reached the finals in the 400 meter dash with a school-record time of 48.87, the third-best time in the preliminary heats. Finally, the Thiel women were well represented by junior Cara Riffe, who advanced to the finals with a school-record mark of 56.10. The finals for all three events will take place on Saturday, May 23.

PAC DUO COMPETES IN JAVELIN AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two PAC track & field standouts competed in the javelin on Thursday, May 21 at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. On the men's side, Washington & Jefferson senior Curt Jones just missed the championship cut as he finished in 10th place with a toss of 189-8 (57.81m). In women's competition, Waynesburg sophomore Elisha Jones placed 11th overall with a toss of 132-11 (40.53m). The championships continue on Friday and Saturday (May 22-23).

PAC PLACES 8 ON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT AT-LARGE TEAM
A total of eight PAC student-athletes (seven men, one woman) have been selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II College Division At-Large teams for men and women, released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 21. On the men's side, three athletes earned first team recognition and now move to the Academic All-America ballot: Grove City tennis player Jeremy Dwyer (3.84 GPA, elementary education), GCC swimmer Richard Albertson (3.93, molecular biology) and W&J senior golfer Joe Cavaney (3.92, economics). Second team men's honors went to three Westminster athletes - senior swimmers Conor Simpson (3.84, political science) and Chris Lehberger (3.51, public relations) along with senior tennis player J.D. Eicher (3.95, business administration) - as well as Grove City senior swimmer Tim Whitbeck (3.38, computer science). Women's second team laurels went to Washington & Jefferson senior swimmer Brittany Bertoli (3.68, child development and education).

GENEVA BASEBALL GOES 1-2 AT NCCAA NATIONALS
The Geneva College baseball team posted a 1-2 mark at the 2009 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament, held at Presco Park in Mason, Ohio on May 20-21. After opening with a 6-1 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic, the Golden Tornadoes were eliminated following losses to top-seeded Malone (12-0) and Cedarville (5-2.)

SIX PAC T&F STANDOUTS QUALIFY FOR NCAA NATIONALS
Six PAC track & field standouts from three different schools have qualified to compete at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, taking place May 21-23 at Don Drumm Stadium at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. Thiel leads the PAC contingent with three qualifiers: Alex Eaton (men's 400 meter dash), Dorran Coley (men's 110 meter high hurdles) and Cara Riffe (women's 400 meter dash). W&J is sending Curt Jones (men's javelin) and Summer Baumgard (women's high jump), while Waynesburg will send Elisha Jones (women's javelin)

MAGISTER, WHITE ARE D3BASEBALL.COM ALL-AMERICANS
Two PAC baseball standouts have been honored by the D3Baseball.com website as members of its 2009 Division III Baseball All-American teams on May 20. Grove City sophomore C Marcus Magister was tabbed to the third team, while Waynesburg junior 2B Wes White Jr. was an honorable mention honoree.

EIGHT PAC PLAYERS EARN ABCA ALL-REGION HONORS
Eight PAC baseball players have been honored as members of the 2009 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Mideast Region Baseball teams, released on May 19. Leading the way was 2009 PAC Player of the Year, W&J junior OF/P Jim Pasquine, who was a first team selection as a utility player. Pasquine was joined on the first team by Grove City sophomore C Marcus Magister. Second team honors went to a pair of Thiel standouts: junior 1B Justin Scarpitti and senior OF Eric Boylan, as well as Waynesburg junior 2B Wes White Jr. Third team recognition was awarded to Westminster senior 1B John Izzo and Thiel senior P Josh Tedesco. Finally, W&J junior C Mark Thomchick earned an All-Region "Gold Glove" Award, recognizing exceptional defensive play.

GENEVA SET FOR NCCAA NATIONAL BASEBALL TOURNEY
The Geneva College baseball team will compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Baseball Championship on May 20-23 at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. The Golden Tornadoes will open the 10-team, double-elimination tournament against Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

PAC RELEASES SPRING '09 TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has announced the 2009 PAC Spring Team Sportsmanship Award winners. This new award is sponsored by the members of the PAC Student-Athlete-Advisory Council (SAAC), in an effort to recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among the conference teams.

PAC SCHOOLS COMPETE AT ECAC T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS
Several PAC schools competed over the weekend at the ECAC Division III Track & Field Championships, hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. The conference was paced by the Waynesburg women, who finished seventh in team competition behind freshman Marybeth Rocco's winning toss in the javelin. Saint Vincent was led by Adam Smith, as the senior placed second in the 5,000 meter run to help the Bearcat men place 17th in men's competition. For Grove City, Chris Huber placed fourth in the shot put, while Bethany was paced by Jodi Bodo, who finished fifth in the 400 meter dash.

W&J FINISHES 14TH AT NCAA MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
The PAC champion Washington & Jefferson men's golf team posted the best national finish in PAC golf history on May 16, as the Presidents finished in 14th place at the 72-hole NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships in Port St. Lucie, Fla. W&J fired a four-day total of 304-294-309-318-1225 (+73) to finish 61 strokes behind champion Oglethorpe (1164, +12). Leading the Presidents at the four-day event was Brad Cieslinski (+13) and John Williams (+15). Full coverage of the event via Golfstat is online.

W&J BASEBALL CLOSES NCAA REGIONAL WITH 2-2 MARK
The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team posted a 1-1 record and was eliminated on the third day of the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional, hosted by Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md. on May 13-16. The Presidents opened the day with a 4-1 victory over York, before being eliminated by Johns Hopkins 10-2. W&J posted a 2-2 mark at the regional and ended the season at 35-14, setting a new school record for wins in a season.

W&J MEN, WC WOMEN SWEEP PAC ALL-SPORTS TROPHIES
The Washington & Jefferson College men and Westminster College women have captured the 2008-09 PAC All-Sports Trophies. The all-sports trophies are awarded annually to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition. First-place finishes are worth eight points (seven for men), second place is worth seven points (six for men) ... last place is worth one point. It is the fifth consecutive All-Sports Trophy win for the W&J men and third straight trophy won by the Westminster women. PAC members Saint Vincent and Geneva are currently provisional members of NCAA Division III and are thus ineligible for the PAC All-Sports Trophy.

PAC ANNOUNCES 2009 ALL-CONFERENCE BASEBALL TEAMS
The 2009 All-PAC Baseball Teams and postseason award winners were announced on May 12. PAC champion Washington & Jefferson swept the top honors, as W&J junior OF/P Jim Pasquine was named PAC Player of the Year, while President mentor Jeff Mountain was tabbed as PAC Coach of the Year.

BETHANY SOFTBALL GOES 1-2 AT ECAC SOUTH TOURNEY
The Bethany College softball team concluded its season this weekend with a third-place finish at the 2009 ECAC Division III South Region Tournament. The Bison went 1-2 in the double-elimination tournament held at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., with all three games being one-run contests. Saturday, the third-seeded Bison were hurt by seven errors in a 7-6 opening round loss to #2 Centenary, but rebounded later in the day to oust top-seeded Juniata with a 1-0 victory. The season ended for BC on Sunday with another 7-6 defeat to Centenary, this time in eight innings.

W&J SWEEPS THIEL, CAPTURES SIXTH PAC BASEBALL TITLE
Top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College emerged from the loser's bracket with a pair of wins over third-seeded Thiel on May 9 to capture the 2009 PAC Baseball Championship Tournament, hosted by W&J at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pa. It is the sixth PAC baseball title in school history for the Presidents, including the fourth in the past six years. The opener was one of the wildest games in PAC baseball tournament history, as the two squads combined for 30 runs in the first 2 1/2 innings of play, with Washington & Jefferson finally prevailing by a 19-18 score. In the final contest, W&J led from the outset en route to a 7-4 victory. With the tournament win, the Presidents receive the PAC's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Tournament, with regional pairings and schedules set to be announced on Monday, May 11.

THOMAS MORE SOFTBALL PLACES 4TH AT NCAA REGIONAL
2009 PAC softball champion Thomas More College was eliminated with a 2-2 record of day three of the 2009 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament on May 9. The Saints opened the day by completing a game with Hiram, which was suspended on May 8 with the score tied 11-11 after nine innings due to darkness. The Saints remained alive by prevailing over the Terriers 13-11 in 10 innings. However, TMC's run came to an end later in the day with an 8-2 loss to Defiance, placing the Saints in fourth place in the seven-team regional at Greencastle, Ind.  The complete tournament bracket is now online.

PAC PLACES 10 ON 2009 ESPN THE MAGAZINE/CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT BASEBALL/SOFTBALL TEAMS
A total of 10 PAC student-athletes have been selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams for baseball and softball, released on May 7 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). In softball, three senior players earned first team recognition: Grove City IF Amy Fisher (3.80 GPA, mathematics), W&J IF Valerie Schultz (3.89, mathematics) and Waynesburg P Autumn Minor (4.0, biology/pre-med). Second team laurels went to Grove City senior OF Rachel Risbon (3.91, molecular biology) and Saint Vincent senior P Ashley Whipkey (3.94, elementary instruction). In baseball, first team recognition went to Thomas More junior IF Chris Fishburn (3.98, sports and entertainment marketing). Second team recipients were the Grove City trio of sophomore C Marcus Magister (3.36, molecular biology), sophomore IF Andrew Patterson (3.94, molecular biology) and senior DH Cody Koontz (3.55, elementary education) as well as Geneva senior P Derek Sumner (3.55, elementary education). All first team selections now move to the Academic All-America ballot.

TMC DUO TABBED TO NFCA ALL-REGION SOFTBALL TEAMS
Thomas More College sophomore pitcher Dana Bors and senior catcher Jennifer Weis have been named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region teams. Bors, the 2009 PAC Player of the Year, was a second team selection, while Weis earned Honorable Mention recognition.

GCC WOMEN'S TENNIS SELECTED FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Grove City College has been selected as one of 47 teams to compete in the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, beginning Friday (May 8). The PAC champion Wolverines (14-4) of head coach Joe Walters were one of six "Pool B" teams selected for the team tournament. Grove City will open play in the single-elimination tournament this Friday, May 8, at noon against Agnes Scott College at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va. The GCC-ASC winner will face Emory University in the second round.

2009 ALL-PAC SOFTBALL TEAMS ANNOUNCED ON MAY 5
The 2009 All-PAC Softball Teams and postseason award winners were released by the conference office on May 5. PAC champion Thomas More swept the major awards, as TMC sophomore pitcher Dana Bors earned conference MVP honors, while first-year Saint mentor Lindsay Bramhall was tabbed as PAC Coach of the Year.

BETHANY SOFTBALL SELECTED FOR ECAC TOURNAMENT
The Bethany College softball team has been selected to compete in the 2009 ECAC Division III South Region Tournament. The Bison (23-19) are the third seed in the five-team, double-elimination tournament and will face second-seeded Centenary (24-12) on Saturday (May 9) at noon at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. Juniata is the top seed and will face the winner of Wednesday's play-in game between #4 Misericordia (25-14) and #5 Frostburg State (26-17) on Saturday at 10 a.m.

GENEVA'S BEAR WINS NCCAA NATIONAL JAVELIN TITLE
Geneva College senior women's track & field standout Tiffany Bear captured the javelin title at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship, which took place Saturday (May 2) at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marian, Ind. Bear posted a mark of 140-4 to win the event by nearly eight feet.

TOP-SEEDED THOMAS MORE SWEEPS THREE GAMES ON MAY 2 TO CAPTURE 2009 PAC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
After suffering a setback in the winner's bracket final to second-seeded Bethany on Friday, May 1, the top-seeded Thomas More Saints roared back with three consecutive wins to capture the 2009 PAC softball championship title on May 2. The win marked the second title in the past three years for the Saints, while the second-seeded Bison were denied in their efforts to repeat as PAC champions. TMC opened the day with a 2-0 shutout win over Westminster, eliminating the Titans from the double-elimination tournament. Needing a pair of wins over Bethany, the Saints rallied from a 3-2 seventh-inning deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 4-3 and force a decisive third matchup. The the PAC title tilt, a first inning solo home run by Jennifer Weis was all the hosts needed as Dana Bors fired a one-hit shutout to record a 1-0 victory. The Saints now earn the PAC's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Softball Championships, with brackets scheduled to be announced on Monday (May 4).

GCC MEN, WC WOMEN REPEAT AS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPS
The Grove City College men and Westminster College women each repeated as team champions at the 2009 PAC Track & Field Championships, hosted by Westminster at Harold Burry Stadium in New Wilmington, Pa. The Wolverine men posted 201 points to easily outdistance Washington & Jefferson (128), while the Titan women scored 143 points to finish ahead of Thiel and Waynesburg, who tied for second (123). Three Thiel athletes earned MVP honors: Alex Eaton (men's track), Cara Riffe (women's track) and Kim Stitt (women's field), along with W&J's Josh Buckley (men's field). Coach of the Year laurels went to Mark FitzPatrick of W&J (men) and Jason Falvo of Waynesburg (women). Complete individual results are now online.

ROGERS PROMOTED TO LEAD TMC MEN'S BASKETBALL
Jeff Rogers
, an assistant coach with the Thomas More College men's basketball program the past two seasons, was promoted to lead the Saint program as head coach on April 23. He replaces John Ellenwood, who resigned after three seasons at TMC to take the head coaching position at Division II Ashland University. The Louisville, Kentucky native was instrumental in leading the Saints to their first-ever PAC men's basketball title in 2008-09. A 1989 graduate of Western Kentucky, Rogers previously spent 10 years as a high school head coach, compiling a record of 201-84. He also held basketball positions with Division I programs at the University of Kentucky and UMKC after beginning his career as an intern with USA Basketball.

W&J SWEEPS 2009 PAC MEN'S & WOMEN'S GOLF TITLES
The 2009 PAC Men's Golf Championships and 2009 PAC Women's Golf Championships each concluded at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex, Pa., on Tuesday, April 21, with Washington & Jefferson College capturing both team titles. The men's race saw W&J fire a 36-hole total of 307-300-607, giving the Presidents a 28-stroke victory over second-place Thomas More (1212) in the 72-hole championship, which includes 36 holes played in September at the PAC Fall Invitational. Medalist honors went to Saint Vincent's Doug Mehall with an even-par 72-70-142. PAC MVP honors went to Joe Ruzick of Thomas More, who won a sudden death playoff with W&J's Brad Cieslinski after both fired a 36-hole total of 147. On the women's side, both W&J and Grove City fired 18-hole totals of 368, but the Presidents captured the title via a 54-hole score (including fall scores) of 1076, 53 strokes ahead of the Wolverines (1129). The final women's 18-hole round, scheduled for Wednesday, was canceled due to poor weather. W&J junior Leslie Walker earned MVP honors for the third straight year after carding an 84 Tuesday. At the conclusion of the tournament, W&J first-year mentor Sean Dove earned PAC Coach of the Year laurels for both men and women.

GROVE CITY CAPTURES 19TH CONSECUTIVE TITLE AT
2009 PAC MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ERIE
The Grove City College men's tennis program swept all nine flights en route to capturing its 19th consecutive team title at the 2009 PAC Men's Tennis Championships, which took place at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa., on Friday-Saturday, April 17-18. The Wolverines of 2009 PAC Coach of the Year Joe Walters earned a maximum-possible 54 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (27), Waynesburg (23), Westminster (18), Thomas More (11) and Bethany (2). GCC senior John Moyer earned PAC Player of the Year laurels for the second consecutive season after winning the first singles and doubles titles. Final singles and doubles brackets are now online.

FIVE FROM PAC NAMED ECAC BASKETBALL ALL-STARS
Three PAC standouts were honored with selection to the ECAC Division III South Men's Basketball All-Stars on April 2, while a pair of conference standouts were tabbed to the ECAC Division III South Women's Basketball All-Stars on April 3 . Junior F Ryne Murray of Westminster, the 2009 PAC Player of the Year, was joined by W&J senior C Josip Lucic-Jozak on the men's second team. In addition, Bethany freshman G Lance Beckwith was tabbed as Men's Rookie of the Year. On the women's side, senior F Emily Hays of Washington & Jefferson, the 2009 PAC Player of the Year, was a first team honors, while her W&J teammate, junior F Maggie Gibson, earned second team laurels.

ELLENWOOD RESIGNS AS THOMAS MORE CAGE COACH
John Ellenwood
, who was named 2009 PAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year after leading Thomas More to its first-ever PAC title, has resigned his position with Thomas More to take the head coaching position at NCAA Division II Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. Ellenwood was 33-48 in three years leading the Saint program, including a 19-9 mark and an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2008-09. Thomas More head baseball coach Jeff Hetzer earned his 200th career coaching win on April 1 as the Saints posted a 6-3 non-conference home win vs. Transylvania. In nine years leading the TMC program, Hetzer is now 200-118-3.

THIEM NAMED TO WBCA ALL-AMERICA HON. MENTION TEAM
Thomas More senior guard Jayme Thiem has been recognized as State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team Honorable Mention by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) on Friday (March 20). Thiem is a two-time All-PAC first team selection who led the PAC champion Saints to a 28-3 mark and an appearance in the NCAA Division III "Sweet Sixteen" in 2009.

PAC HAS 15 STUDENT-ATHLETES QUALIFY TO COMPETE AT 2009 NCAA DIVISION III SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
A conference-record 15 PAC student-athletes (11 men, four women) have qualified for and been selected to compete at the 2009 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, scheduled for March 18-21, 2009 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Leading the way was PAC champion Grove City, which will send 11 men's swimmers and divers to the meet, led by former national champions Caleb Courage and Tim Whitbeck. In addition, Westminster will send four women's swimmers to nationals, led by three-time NCAA qualifier Megan Mier.

EIGHT PAC CAGERS HONORED BY D3HOOPS.COM; GCC'S HARRIS NAMED GREAT LAKES REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Eight PAC basketball players have been named to the 2009 All-Great Lakes Region Men's & Women's Basketball teams by D3Hoops.com. Grove City women's coach Sarah Harris was named Regional Coach of the Year by the website. On the women's side, three of the five first team selections were PAC players, as 2009 PAC Player of the Year Emily Hays of W&J was joined by the Thomas More duo of Jayme Thiem and Nicole Dickman. W&J junior center Maggie Gibson was a second team honoree, while sophomore forward Christine Slater of Grove City earned third team laurels. The three men's honorees were led by Westminster junior F Ryne Murray, as the 2009 PAC Player of the Year was a first team selection. W&J senior center Josip Lucic-Jozak and Grove City junior C Andy O'Keefe were tabbed to the second and third teams, respectively.

PAC AWARDS 2008-09 WINTER SPORTSMANSHIP HONORS
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has announced the 2008-09 Winter PAC Team Sportsmanship Award winners. This new award is sponsored by the members of the PAC Student-Athlete-Advisory Council (SAAC), in an effort to recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among the conference teams.

GCC'S COURAGE WINS NATIONAL TITLE IN 100 FREESTYLE ON FINAL DAY OF NCAA D-III SWIMMING/DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Grove City College senior Caleb Courage captured the NCAA Division III national title in the 100 freestyle on Saturday night to highlight the final day of action at the 2009 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday, March 21.
It is Courage's third career title in that event. Courage posted a victorious time of 43.62 seconds in the championship heat. In the preliminaries, Courage established a new Division III record in the 100 free with a time of 43.60. Courage won the 100 free national title as a sophomore in 2006. In 2007, he successfully defended his NCAA crown in the 100 freestyle. Courage spent the 2007-08 academic year in training for the United States Olympic Trials. The PAC women were paced by Westminster freshman Caitlin Lehberger, who earned All-America honorable mention honors after placing 12th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.63. In team competition, Grove City finished in sixth place among men's teams with 168 points, while Westminster was tied for 20th among women's programs with 34 points. FIVE PAC STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS AT 2009 NCAA D-III INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships took place in Terre Haute, Ind. on March 13-14, resulting in five student-athletes from the conference earning All-America honors. Thiel College took home four of the awards en route to a ninth-place team finish: Alex Eaton was second in the 400 meter dash; Dorran Coley was third in the 55 meter high hurdles; and Deighton Williams and Ethan Rowe joined Eaton and Coley for a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Washington & Jefferson standout Summer Baumgard also earned All-America recognition after finishing in a tie for seventh place in the high jump.

THOMAS MORE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS 67-51 TO #2 HOPE IN 2009 NCAA DIVISION III TOURNAMENT SECTIONAL
The PAC champion Thomas More College women's basketball team saw its 2008-09 season come to an end Friday night (March 13) following a 67-51 home loss to #2-ranked Hope College in the sectional semifinal round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. With the loss, the Saint season ends at 28-3 overall.

W&J MEN'S BASKETBALL CAPTURES ECAC D-III SOUTH TITLE
Seniors Josip Lucic-Jozak and Wahab Owolabi both racked up double-doubles of 21 points and 10 rebounds in their final collegiate game to lead sixth-seeded Washington  & Jefferson to a 79-67 victory over top-seeded Cabrini in the championship game of the ECAC Division III South Men's Basketball Tournament on Sunday, March 8. The Presidents (20-10) became just the second team in school history to win 20 games in a season.

THOMAS MORE WOMEN TOP MESSIAH 57-50; SAINT CAGERS ADVANCE TO "SWEET SIXTEEN" IN NCAA D-III TOURNAMENT
Senior G Jayme Thiem scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Thomas More women’s basketball team to a 57-50 win over host Messiah College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament tonight (Saturday, March 7) at Brubaker Auditorium in Grantham, Pa. With the win the Saints improve to 28-2 and will host the regional semifinals and finals this weekend (Friday-Saturday, March 13-14). The Saints will play No. 2 ranked Hope College Friday at 7 p.m., with George Fox and Oglethorpe meeting in the other matchup at 5 p.m. The two winners will meet for the right to advance to the Final Four on Saturday at 7 p.m.

THIEL'S BROWN EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS TO LEAD PAC CONTINGENT AT NCAA D-III WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Four PAC wrestlers represented the conference at the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 6-7. Leading the quartet was 133-pound freshman Corey Brown from PAC champion Thiel. Brown, the 2009 PAC Wrestler of the Year, earned NCAA Division III All-America honors with a sixth-place finish. Brown's Tomcat teammate, 125-pounder Rob Miller, went 0-2 at the meet, dropping a 5-4 decision in the opening round before being eliminated via injury default. A pair of Waynesburg wrestlers fared well at the event. Sophomore 141-pounder Nick Garber and freshman 197-pounder Corbin Semple combined to win three of their first four matches before being eliminated late on Friday night. W&J CAGERS ADVANCE TO ECAC BASKETBALL TITLE GAME
The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the 2009 ECAC Division III South Region Tournament on Saturday, March 7. The Presidents, seeded sixth in the eight-team, single-elimination tournament, posted their second consecutive upset win by upending second-seeded Catholic University 57-41. The game was tied 21-21 at the half, but the Presidents outscored CU 36-20 in the final 20 minutes to advance. W&J will now play top seed and host Cabrini tomorrow (Sunday, March 8) at 2 p.m. for the ECAC crown.

THOMAS MORE WOMEN ADVANCE TO NCAA SECOND ROUND; W&J WOMEN FALL AT #2 HOPE, TMC MEN DROP OT THRILLER
The opening round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Basketball Tournaments saw all three PAC qualifiers in action, with the PAC champion Thomas More women advancing to the second round. The Saints (27-2) posted a 76-61 win over Randolph-Macon at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., behind a game-high 22 points by sophomore C Nicole Dickman. TMC now advances to face host Messiah, which advanced with an opening round win over Eastern Connecticut State, tomorrow (Sat., March 7) at 7 p.m. In other women's tournament action, Washington & Jefferson saw its season end at 24-5 overall following an 87-64 loss at #2-ranked Hope College in Holland, Mich. The game of the night was on the men's side, where the PAC champion Thomas More men gave #13-ranked Capital all it could handle before falling 80-77 in overtime to the hosts in Columbus, Ohio. With the loss, the Saint season ends at 19-9.

PAC BASKETBALL TEAMS GO 1-2 IN ECAC TOURNAMENT
PAC men's basketball teams went 1-2 in the opening round of the 2009 ECAC Division III South Region Tournament on Wednesday, March 4. The lone victory for the conference was sixth-seeded Washington & Jefferson, which went on the road to upset third seed Pitt-Bradford 77-69. With the win, the Presidents now advance to the weekend "Final Four," to be hosted by top-seeded Cabrini College. In other ECAC action, #5 Bethany dropped a tight 73-69 decision at #4 Penn State-Behrend, while #7 Grove City saw its season end with a 75-59 loss at #2 Catholic. W&J and Catholic will face off in one semifinal on Saturday (March 7) at 1 p.m. at Cabrini, with the winner facing the Cabrini-Behrend winner on Sunday at 2 p.m.

FOUR PAC WRESTLERS HEADED TO NCAA D-III NATIONALS
The PAC will be represented by four conference wrestlers this weekend at the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 6-7. Waynesburg will be represented by sophomore Nick Garber and freshman Corbin Semple at 141 and 197 pounds, respectively. Both Garber and Semple captured regional titles on February 21. PAC champion Thiel will be represented by 125-pounder Rob Miller and 133-pounder Corey Brown, who both placed second at the Midwest Regionals. Brown was named the 2009 PAC MVP after capturing the 133-pound title with a pair of wins, including a thrilling 10-9 decision over Garber, at the PAC Championships on Feb. 14.

ALL SAINTS DAY 2009: THOMAS MORE COLLEGE SWEEPS PAC MEN'S & WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TITLES ON FEB. 28
The top-seeded Thomas More men's & women's basketball teams each captured PAC Championships on their home court on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Saint women earned their third consecutive PAC crown with a 59-49 win over second-seeded Washington & Jefferson. In men's action, the top-seeded Saints earned their first-ever PAC title with a 91-65 defeat of second seed Bethany. Both TMC squads have now earned automatic bids to the 2009 NCAA Division III Tournaments, with brackets to be announced on Monday (March 2).

SHOWDOWN BETWEEN NATIONALLY-RANKED TMC, W&J SET FOR 2009 PAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FINAL
The championship game for the 2009 PAC Women's Basketball Tournament is set, as nationally-ranked top seeds Thomas More and Washington & Jefferson will meet with the conference crown on the line. The top-seeded Saints, two-time defending conference champions, advanced to the final via an 81-43 victory over fifth seed Thiel. The second-seeded Presidents used a huge 34-3 second half run to overcome a two-point halftime deficit and upend third seed Bethany 78-62. It will be the third meeting between the two powers, as W&J won at home 68-62 on Jan. 10, while the Saints topped the Presidents in Kentucky 56-45 on February 11.

2009 ALL-PAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS ANNOUNCED
The 2009 All-Presidents' Athletic Conference teams and postseason award winners for women's basketball were announced between tournament semifinal games at Thomas More on Friday, February 27. MVP honors went to W&J senior F Emily Hays, while Sarah Harris of Grove City College was tabbed as 2009 PAC Coach of the Year.

TMC, BETHANY ADVANCE TO PAC MEN'S HOOPS TITLE TILT
Top seeds Thomas More and Bethany will battle for the 2009 PAC Men's Basketball Championship, as the top-seeded Saints and second-seeded Bison each posted home court semifinal victories on Thursday (Feb. 26). TMC outlasted fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson 78-64 in one semifinal contest, while the Bison edged third-seeded Westminster 71-67 in the other matchup. The two victors will battle for the league title and the PAC's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 5 p.m. at Thomas More's Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Ky. The defending PAC champion Bison will be looking for their fourth conference crown in the past five years, while the Saints will be looking for their first-ever PAC men's basketball title.

PAC TOURNAMENTS OPEN WITH SEVEN GAMES ON FEB. 24
The 2009 PAC Basketball Championship Tournaments are underway following the completion of seven opening round games on Tuesday, February 24. All three top seeds advanced with wins on the men's side, while top-seeded Thomas More had a first round bye. #2 Bethany overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat upset-minded #7 Thiel 74-69. #3 Westminster used a big second half to upend #6 Waynesburg 94-78, while #4 Washington & Jefferson outlasted #5 Grove City 74-68. As a result, Thursday's semifinal round has W&J traveling to Thomas More, while Westminster will head to Bethany. In women's action, the lone upset saw #5 Thiel outscored #4 Grove City 41-26 in the second half en route to a 65-51 road victory. The top three seeds all advanced. Top-seeded Thomas More clinched hosting rights for the women's "Final Four" with a 60-46 home win over #8 Chatham. #2 Washington & Jefferson held off annual nemesis #7 Westminster 70-57, while the game of the night saw #3 Bethany come back from a 12-point halftime deficit to edge #6 Waynesburg 68-63 in overtime. The women's semifinals are set for Friday night in Crestview Hills, Ky., with Bethany and W&J meeting at 6 p.m., followed by Thiel and Thomas More at 8 p.m.

GARBER, SEMPLE CAPTURE REGIONAL WRESTLING TITLES
Two Waynesburg University wrestlers captured weight class titles at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Trine University in Angola, Ind., this weekend. Yellow Jacket standouts Nick Garber and Corbin Semple won titles at 141 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively, to become the first Waynesburg wrestlers to advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships since Shawn Whyte in 2001. In team competition, PAC champion Thiel finished in fifth place with 97.5 points, followed by Waynesburg in sixth (83.5) and Washington & Jefferson in 11th (39.5).

The PAC has announced the pairings for the 2009 PAC Championship Tournaments in men's & women's basketball, which take place this week (Feb. 24-28) at campus sites. Thomas More College is the top seed in men's basketball, as the Saints of head coach John Ellenwood posted a 10-2 conference regular season record to clinch a first round bye and home court advantage throughout the PAC Tournament. Defending PAC champion Bethany College is the second seed. Two-time defending PAC champion Thomas More is the top seed for the women's tournament after completing a 13-1 regular season mark. GROVE CITY SWEEPS 2009 PAC SWIMMING & DIVING TITLES
The 2009 PAC Swimming & Diving Championships are officially in the books, with host Grove City sweeping the men's and women's team titles. The GCC men ended the three-day with 949 team points, comfortably ahead of second place Westminster (805.5) as GCC captured its second straight PAC men's team crown. The Wolverine women finished the event with 833.5 points, edging Westminster (759.5) and defending champion W&J (735). GCC mentor Dave Fritz earned PAC Men's Coach of the Year laurels, while Rob Klamut of Westminster was PAC Women's Coach of the Year. Conference MVP laurels went to senior Caleb Courage of Grove City for the men, while the women's award went to Westminster seniors Emily Dressler and Megan Mier. THIEL CONTINUES PAC WRESTLING DOMINATION; TOMCATS CAPTURE 10TH STRAIGHT TITLE, SWEEP 2009 PAC AWARDS
Thiel College captured its 10th consecutive PAC wrestling title on February 14 at the 2009 PAC Wrestling Championships, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. The Matcats captured six of the 10 weight class finals and finished with 125 points to easily outdistance Waynesburg (88) and W&J (63) in team competition. Freshman 133-pounder Corey Brown of Thiel was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, while veteran Tomcat mentor Craig Thurber garnered Coach of the Year laurels.

PAC TO CROWN 2009 CHAMPIONS IN MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING, WRESTLING ON FEBRUARY 14
Three new PAC champions will be crowned on Valentines Day (Saturday, Feb. 14) as the conference hosts 2009 championships in the sports of men's and women's swimming & diving and wrestling this week. Grove City College will again host the 2009 PAC Swimming & Diving Championships as part of the 10-team Grove City College Invitational on Thursday-Saturday, February 12-14. Preliminary rounds begin daily at 10 a.m., followed by consolation and championship round beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. For the second consecutive year, a free live video webcast of the event will be available. Washington & Jefferson College will host the 2009 PAC Wrestling Championships on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 4 p.m. at the Henry Memorial Center.

SIX PAC CAGERS SELECTED TO 2008-09 ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT COLLEGE DIV. BASKETBALL TEAMS
A total of six PAC basketball standouts (four women, two men) have been selected to the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District College Division Men's & Women's Basketball teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released on February 5. Thomas More senior G Alex Gee (3.97 GPA, psychology) was an All-District IV second team selection, while Washington & Jefferson junior F Maggie Gibson (3.61, business administration) was a second team honoree in District II. Also, in District II, third team laurels went to Bethany senior G Kaitlyn McCormick (3.86, psychology/pre-physical therapy) and W&J junior G Kennan Killeen (3.48, English). Men's District II honorees were junior G Matt Drakeley (3.98, cell and molecular biology) of W&J on the first team and senior F Petre Petkovski (3.77, international economics) of Bethany on the second team.

PAC NAMES 304 TO FALL 2008 ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
A total of 304 conference student-athletes have been named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll for the Fall 2008 semester. To earn Academic Honor Roll recognition, a student-athlete must maintain a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) during their semester of varsity competition.

PAC PLACES PAIR IN D3HOOPS.COM WOMEN'S TOP 25
For the first time in conference history, the PAC has two women's basketball programs ranked among the top 25 Division III teams in the nation at the same time. The historic poll was released on Jan. 13 by the D3Hoops.com website. Defending PAC champion Thomas More, which was ranked as high as fourth in the nation earlier this season, is ranked 16th in the current poll. Washington & Jefferson, which topped the Saints 68-62 on Saturday, moved into the poll for the first time at #25.

W&J's SWALLOW TABBED AS ECAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Washington & Jefferson senior quarterback Bobby Swallow has added another award to his growing list of accolades, as he was named ECAC Division III Southwest Football Player of the Year on January 5. Swallow was joined by President teammates Craig Besong, Matt Houy, Dave Bucar, and Jacob Bloomhuff as well as Grove City's Adam Eichler on the ECAC Division III Southwest All-Star team.

BETHANY HIRES REGAN AS MEN'S SOCCER HEAD COACH
Sean Regan was selected as the new head men’s soccer coach at Bethany College on December 22. Regan, who owns coaching badges from the Irish Football Association and United States Soccer Association, comes to Bethany after serving as an assistant for three seasons at PAC rival Washington & Jefferson. A 2005 graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, he helped the Cardinals claim two WVIAC regular season titles (2001, 2003) and one conference tournament championship (2003) as a player. Regan replaces Kosmas Mouratidis, who resigned following the 2008 season.

WAYNESBURG DUO, SWALLOW EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Three PAC football players were tabbed to All-America teams selected by the Associated Press (AP) and the D3Football.com website on December 20. Waynesburg senior DE D.J. DeWitt was the lone PAC player selected to the AP Little All-America team, as he was a second team honoree. DeWitt's Yellow Jacket teammate and classmate, kick/punt returner Scott Cree, was named to the All-America Third Team by D3Football.com, while W&J senior quarterback Bobby Swallow was a honorable mention pick by the website.

SWALLOW, STEINMETZ NAMED AFCA GRID ALL-AMERICANS
A pair of PAC football standouts have been named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 2008 NCAA Division III All-America team, released on December 17. Washington & Jefferson senior quarterback Bobby Swallow and Thomas More junior linebacker Brad Steinmetz were each to the 25-man squad. Swallow, the 2008 PAC Player of the Year, also earned AFCA All-America laurels in 2007.

THREE PAC KICKERS NAMES TO NSCAA ALL-REGION TEAMS
The PAC placed three men's soccer standouts on the 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Mid Atlantic Region Teams, released on December 11. Westminster senior M Garrett Horvath and Thomas More sophomore F Aaron Osbourn were both tabbed to the second team, while W&J senior D Ryan McDonald was a third team honoree.

PAC AWARDS FALL 2008 TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP HONORS
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has announced the Fall 2008 PAC Team Sportsmanship Award winners. This new award is sponsored by the members of the PAC Student-Athlete-Advisory Council (SAAC), in an effort to recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among the conference teams.

ELEVEN GRIDDERS NAMED ALL-REGION BY D3FOOTBALL.COM
A total of 11 PAC football standouts have been named to the 2008 All-South Region teams by the D3Football.com website, released on December 10. The lone first team selection was Waynesburg senior DE D.J. DeWitt. Washington & Jefferson had a league-high six players selected, including five on the second team: senior QB Bobby Swallow, senior RB Curt Jones, senior G Matt Houy, senior C Dave Bucar, and junior WR Craig Besong. Other second team honorees were Thomas More junior LB Brad Steinmetz and Waynesburg senior returner Scott Cree. Three third team selections rounded out the conference honorees: Bethany junior TE Jorge Laboy, Grove City junior DT Tony Clark, and W&J sophomore DB Craig Sedunov.

PAC TRIO NAMED NSCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER ALL-REGION
Three PAC women's soccer standouts were selected to the 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region Third Team on December 9. Earning All-Region recognition from the NSCAA was senior F Christina Adams of Westminster, junior M Spencer Ahrenholtz of Washington & Jefferson, and freshman F Lauren Wietmarschen of Thomas More.

W&J FOOTBALL FALLS TO UMH-B IN NATIONAL QUARTERS
The Washington & Jefferson football team saw its 2008 season come to an end in the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Playoffs on Dec. 6, as the Presidents (11-2) dropped a 63-7 decision at Mary Hardin-Baylor.

W&J FOOTBALL UPSETS MILLSAPS 35-20; PRESIDENTS ADVANCE TO NCAA NATIONAL QUARTERFINALS VS. UMH-B
Only eight teams remain in the 2008 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs following the conclusion of the second round of action on November 29, and the Washington & Jefferson Presidents are among those still standing. W&J upset South Region top seed Millsaps 35-20 in Jackson, Miss. behind a stellar rushing effort by senior tailback Curt Jones, who posted 208 yards on the ground and four touchdowns in the President victory. Washington & Jefferson (11-1) now advances to the national quarterfinals, as the Presidents will travel to Belton, Texas to face the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (11-1) for the South Region title at 1 p.m. EST (noon CST).

THREE PAC GRIDDERS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS
Three PAC football standouts have been namd to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Football second team, released on November 26 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A pair of senior offensive linemen - Matt Houy of Washington & Jefferson (3.62 GPA, information technology leadership/pre-dental) and Dave Salera of Grove City (3.83, accounting) - were honored, as was Grove City senior linebacker Adam Eichler (3.52, molecular biology/pre-dental).

W&J'S SWALLOW NAMED FINALIST FOR GAGLIARDI TROPHY
Washington & Jefferson College senior quarterback Bobby Swallow has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy.  The Gagliardi Trophy has become one of the leading collegiate football awards and is widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics and community service. WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON ADVANCES, THOMAS MORE FALLS IN 1ST ROUND OF NCAA D-III FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
The PAC went 1-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III playoffs on November 22. Washington & Jefferson advanced to the second round following a 35-29 home victory over Christopher Newport, while Thomas More suffered a 44-23 setback at North Central. W&J advances to face South Region top seed Millsaps, a 51-26 first round winner over LaGrange, next Saturday (November 29)at 1 p.m.

WESTMINSTER LEADS PAC ALL-SPORTS TROPHY RACES
Westminster College has taken the early lead at the conclusion of the 2008 fall season in the race for the 2008-09 PAC Men's & Women's All-Sports Trophies. The all-sports trophies are awarded annually to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition.

ELLWANGER NAMED SOCCER ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Westminster College men's soccer standout Chris Ellwanger was selected to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on November 19. Ellwanger, a senior defender for the Titans who earned second team honors for the College Division, becomes the 23rd student-athlete in Westminster history to earn Academic All-America honors dating back to 1967 and the first-ever Westminster men's soccer player to receive this recognition. A physics major with a 3.77 grade-point average, Ellwanger qualified for Academic All-America status after earning first-team all-District II accolades.

ALL-PAC TEAMS RELEASED FOR MEN'S & WOMEN'S SOCCER
The 2008 All-PAC Men's Soccer and Women's Soccer teams were released on Tuesday, November 18, with the PAC champions in both sports leading the award winners. On the men's side, senior midfielder Garrett Horvath of PAC champion Westminster was tabbed 2008 PAC Player of the Year, while Titan mentor Girish Thakar was tabbed for PAC Coach of the Year honors. On the women's side, the 2008 Player of the Year was senior goalkeeper Jackie Foltz of league champion Washington & Jefferson, while President mentor Pete Curtis garnered PAC Coach of the Year laurels.

2008 ALL-PAC FOOTBALL TEAMS RELEASED ON NOV. 17
The 2008 All-PAC football teams were released on Monday, November 17. Washington & Jefferson senior quarterback Bobby Swallow was tabbed the 2008 PAC Player of the Year, while 2008 PAC Coach of the Year laurels went to Jim Hilvert of league champion Thomas More.

PAC SOCCER TEAMS FALL IN NCAA SECOND ROUND ACTION
Both PAC soccer champions were defeated in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs on Sunday, November 16. Westminster men's soccer battled unbeaten and #3 ranked Montclair State through over 70 minutes of scoreless action, before giving up the game's lone goal in a 1-0 defeat. The Titans close the season at 17-6. Washington & Jefferson women's soccer also suffered a second round defeat Sunday, as the Presidents were ousted by Messiah 6-0. W&J closed the campaign at 15-6-2.

GCC CROSS COUNTRY TRIO HEADED FOR NCAA NATIONALS
Three Grove City College cross country runners - women's seniors Kristen Carter and Julia Seward and men's sophomore Garrett Cichowitz - have qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's & Women's Cross Country National Championships, to be hosted by Hanover College in Hanover, Ind., on Saturday, November 22. Carter and Seward placed second and third, respectively, at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, hosted by PAC member Waynesburg University on Saturday. Cichowitz finished in 17th place at the men's regional at Waynesburg.

LEIPHEIMER NAMED THIEL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR; REISER PROMOTED TO LEAD TOMCAT FOOTBALL PROGRAM
John A. “Jack” Leipheimer will assume the position of director of athletics at Thiel College, it was announced on November 16.  Assistant head football coach Kurt Reiser, who followed Leipheimer to Thiel in 2001, will take over as the 25th head coach in Thiel football history.  The changes are effective Monday, Nov. 17. Leipheimer, a 1974 Thiel graduate who served as Tomcat head coach for the past seven seasons, led Thiel to a school-best 11-1 record, the PAC Championship and the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2005. He replaces Roseanne Gill-Jacobson, VP for Student Life and Dean of Students of Thiel, who served as interim AD for the past 2 1/2 years. Reiser, a 1993 graduate of Allegheny College where he was an all-conference tight end for the Gators, most recently was offensive coordinator/quarterback coach of the Tomcats.

PAC PLACES PAIR IN NCAA D-III FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
For the second time in the past four years, the PAC has placed a pair of teams in the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs. Both PAC champion Thomas More (8-2) and league runner-up Washington & Jefferson (9-1) were selected to the 32-team 2008 field, which opens play on Saturday, November 22. The PAC champion Saints earned the PAC's automatic bid (pool A) and will open at North region top seed North Central (10-0), while the fifth-seeded Presidents, who earned a pool C "at-large" bid, will host sixth-seed Christopher Newport (8-1) at Cameron Stadium in the opening round in the South region. Both games will start at noon local time.

"PAC FOOTBALL RIVALRY WEEK" CLOSES 2008 REGULAR SEASON; THOMAS MORE, W&J AWAIT WORD ON PLAYOFFS
Saturday, November 15 marked the final date of Division III regular season football action, and also the debut of "PAC Football Rivalry Week." All nine PAC schools were in action in rivalry contests, with several that date whose histories date back over 100 years. PAC champion Thomas More (8-2) recaptured the "Bridge Bowl" trophy following a 19-0 home shutout of Mount St. Joseph. Washington & Jefferson (9-1, 5-1 PAC) improved its chances at a Pool C berth in the NCAA Division III Playoffs following a 42-9 win at Waynesburg (5-5, 2-4 PAC) in the "PAC Backyard Brawl." Both Thomas More and W&J will await the release of the 32-team NCAA Division III playoff bracket on Sunday at 3 p.m. In other rivalry action, "The Game" was won by Geneva (5-5) over Westminster (5-5), 29-26. Grove City (6-4, 3-3 PAC) kept control of the "Mercer County Cup" after edging Thiel (2-8, 1-5 PAC) at home, 20-14. Finally, Bethany (3-7) captured the "Green Game" with a 44-14 decision at Saint Vincent (1-9). Final regular season conference statistics are now online, while the PAC weekly release with Player of the Week will be available on Monday.

WESTMINSTER WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN ECAC SOUTH SEMIFINALS; GENEVA MEN FALL IN NCCAA PLAYOFFS
A pair of conference soccer programs saw their seasons come to an end following postseason losses on November 15. The Westminster women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 shutout loss to Swarthmore in the ECAC Division III South Region Tournament in Frostburg, Md. The Geneva men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Roberts Wesleyan in the semifinals of the NCCAA East Regional.

WESTMINSTER MEN, W&J WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAMS BOTH ADVANCE TO NCAA 2ND ROUND; TITAN VOLLEYBALL FALLS
Three PAC teams opened play in the NCAA Division III playoffs on Thursday, November 13, as the PAC advanced both a men's and women's soccer team to the NCAA second round in the same year for the first time in conference history. Westminster men's soccer advanced to a second round showdown at unbeaten Montclair State following a 2-0 home shutout of Hunter. The Titans will face Montclair on Sunday at 1 p.m. Washington & Jefferson women's soccer also advanced, as the Presidents battled Marywood to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes, then advanced to a second round contest at Messiah on Sunday at 5 p.m. after posting a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks. In volleyball action, Westminster saw its season come to an end following a 3-1 loss to national power Ohio Northern in an NCAA first round match at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

Westminster men's soccer and Washington & Jefferson women's soccer will each remain at home for their first round NCAA playoff games this week, while Westminster volleyball will be on the road for the opening round. Westminster women's soccer is the #2 seed in the eight-team field and will host #7 Catholic in an opening round contest at Burry Stadium in New Wilmington at 5 p.m. Washington & Jefferson men's soccer will travel to Frostburg State for a first round contest at 6 p.m. Finally, W&J volleyball will head to Erie at 7 p.m. for a first-round ECAC contest at Penn State-Behrend.

SVC'S ADAM SMITH CAPTURES ECAC CROSS COUNTRY TITLE
Saint Vincent College senior cross country runner Adam Smith capped off his collegiate career by capturing the individual championship at the 2008 ECAC Championship meet on Saturday in Bristol, RI. Smith took first place out of 322 runners by covering the eight-kilometer course in 26:18. The Bearcat men took seventh in a 48-team field at the event, while the Lady Bearcats were 12th out of 42 teams, paced by Katie Macioce's 12th-place finish.

Saturday, November 8 saw three PAC fall sport championships awarded, while the conference also released its 20008 All-PAC volleyball teams. Westminster was the big winner of the day, as the Titan netters captured the 2008 volleyball crown with a 3-1 victory over Thomas More. Saturday evening, the Westminster men's soccer team also came away with a conference title following a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Washington & Jefferson. W&J captured its first-ever PAC women's soccer crown, as the Presidents outlasted Thomas More 1-0 in overtime. All three PAC champions have earned automatic bids to the 2008 NCAA Division III playoffs in their respective sports, with brackets and pairings to be announced on Monday, November 10. The All-PAC volleyball teams were also released late Saturday, as Waynesburg senior OH Laurie Lindner was named PAC Player of the year, Thomas More S Michelle Clifford was tabbed as PAC Freshman of the Year, while Coach of the Year laurels went to Westminster mentor Tammy Swearingen.

Five PAC gridders earned District II first team recognition and now advance to the Academic All-America ballot: senior WR Stephen Mercer (3.33 GPA, electrical engineering), senior OL Dave Salera (3.83, accounting) and senior LB Adam Eichler (3.52, molecular biology/pre-dental) of Grove City, senior OL Matt Houy (3.62, info. tech. leadership/pre-dental) of W&J, and senior LB Dan Terracciano (3.94, youth ministry) of Geneva. THOMAS MORE, W&J ADVANCE TO PAC WOMEN'S SOCCER FINALS; START TIMES FOR SATURDAY FINALS ANNOUNCED
Top seed Thomas More and third seed Washington & Jefferson have each advanced to the finals of the 2008 PAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament following semifinal wins on Wednesday, November 5. Lauren Wietmarschen and Taylor Stoll each had a goal and an assist as the Saints posted a 2-0 victory over fourth seed Grove City in one semifinal, while the Presidents topped second seed and defending PAC champion Westminster 1-0 in double overtime on a goal by Spencer Ahrenholtz in the other semifinal contest. Thomas More will now host W&J for the PAC women's soccer title Saturday (Nov. 8) at 1 p.m. The PAC also announced start times for the PAC championship contests in both volleyball and men's soccer Saturday. The volleyball finals will begin at 1 p.m. at Westminster's Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in New Wilmington, while the men's soccer final between #2 Washington & Jefferson and #1 Westminster will kick off at 7 p.m. at Westminster's Harold Burry Stadium in New Wilmington.

GROVE CITY CAPTURES EIGHT FLIGHTS, ROLLS TO 22ND CONSECUTIVE PAC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2008 PAC Women's Tennis Championships came down to a dual match between Grove City and Westminster, as both teams advanced to the finals in all nine flights. As in their regular season matchup, Grove City came away with wins in eight of the flights to capture its 22nd consecutive PAC women's tennis title. The Wolverines of head coach Joe Walters finished with 52 of a possible 54 points, comfortably ahead of the second-place Titans (38). PAC Player of the Year laurels went to Grove City senior Tamara Nations, while veteran Westminster mentor Scott Renninger was tabbed 2008 PAC Coach of the Year The complete singles and doubles draw is also online.

PAC FALL GOLF A PRESIDENTIAL AFFAIR: WILLIAMS, W&J MEN WIN TITLES; W&J WOMEN, LAZORCHAK ALSO ON TOP
The 2008 PAC Fall Golf Invitational turned into a Presidential affair at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex, Pa., on Monday-Wednesday, September 29-October 1, as the Washington & Jefferson Presidents dominated play in both men's & women's action. The 36-hole men's tournament concluded with W&J firing a 285-292-577, 24 strokes ahead of second place Westminster (601). In addition, John Williams of W&J took medalist honors with a 71-68-139. The 36-hole women's tournament finished with the Presidents firing a 362-346-708 to top second place Grove City (761) by 53 strokes. W&J senior Alison Lazorchak was the medalist with a 159, edging teammate Leslie Walker by a stroke. The PAC Fall Golf Invitational counts for half of the 2008-09 PAC golf championship, with the final 36 holes to take place at Oak Tree in April 2009.

GROVE CITY CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS EARN RANKINGS
The Grove City College men's and women's cross country teams have each been regionally ranked in the NCAA Division III Mideast Region preseason poll compiled by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The GCC women are ranked fourth in the region, while the Wolverine men are eighth.

PAC TENNIS TEAMS, PLAYERS EARN ITA ACADEMIC HONORS
Several PAC tennis teams and student-athletes have been named have earned 2008 All-Academic honors by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The ITA Academic Team Award, given to squads with a cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) or 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale, was given to the Westminster men's & women's teams, the Grove City men, and the Waynesburg women. ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, given to varsity players who posted a 3.5 GPA or higher in the most recent academic year, were given to 19 PAC student-athletes (eight men, 11 women). Grove City led the men's side with five players (Chris Baker, Peter Davis, Bill Derocha, Jeremy Dwyer, Jon Pombo), joined by the Westminster duo of J.D. Eicher and Scott Lawrence along with Jeff Canning of Waynesburg. On the women's side, Waynesburg had six honorees (Victoria Danielczuk, Dana Davis, Laura Garcia, Britni Green, Jess Mally and Alexandra Yackel), while Westminster has five (Christina Commisso, Trista Houck, Dana Larson, April Scudere, Anna Will).

SAINT VINCENT, THOMAS MORE HIRE NEW FALL COACHES
Saint Vincent College and Thomas More College have each hired new head coaches to lead fall sport programs. SVC has hired Rebecca Stewart as its new head women's soccer coach. She replaces Keith Harmon, who remains as Bearcat men's soccer coach. Stewart was a two-year starter and graduate of Clarion University who most recently was an assistant coach at Mount Union. Thomas More has hired Nicki Lampe as its new head women's tennis coach. Lampe replaces Clare Krumme, who stepped down after three seasons at the helm of the program.

W&J PICKED TO REPEAT AT 2008 PAC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY; CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR "FOOTBALL RIVALRY WEEK" AND "PAC-MAC FOOTBALL CHALLENGE SERIES"
Washington & Jefferson College was picked to capture the 2008 football championship in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), according to the preseason poll released at the 2008 PAC Football Media Day at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe today. The defending PAC champion Presidents of sixth-year head coach Mike Sirianni earned 23 of 28 first-place votes and 192 points in the conference poll to edge second place Waynesburg (165), followed by Westminster (100), Grove City (97), Thomas More (87), Bethany (78), and Thiel (65). In other PAC football news, the conference announced plans for "Football Rivalry Week" beginning in 2008, as well as the "PAC-MAC Football Challenge Series" for 2010-11. W&J, WU GRIDDERS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS
Several PAC football standouts have been named 2008 Preseason All-Americans by websites and publications covering Division III football. Washington & Jefferson senior G Matt Houy highlighted three Presidents recently named to the 2008 D3football.com Preseason All-America Team as a first-team selection. In addition, seniors QB Bobby Swallow and C Dave Bucar were second-team honorees. Houy earned his third preseason All-America mention after receiving the same honor from The Sporting News and Lindy’s. Waynesburg sophomore RB Robert Heller and senior DE DJ Dewitt were also honored as second-team pre-season All-Americans by D3football.com. Heller also earned preseason All-American honors from The Sporting News.

JENNIFER DUBOW HIRED AS PAC ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
The PAC has hired Jennifer Dubow as associate director of the conference, effective August 1. Dubow will assist PAC executive director Joe Onderko in all aspects of conference operations, with a focus on the PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and NCAA Division III compliance issues. The Dana Point, California native is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College, where she was team captain of the women's tennis team, and recently graduated from the Duquesne University School of Law.

THOMAS MORE HIRES BRAMHALL AS SOFTBALL COACH
Thomas More College has named Lindsay Bramhall as head coach of the Saint softball program. She replaces Emily Price, who resigned after one season leading the program. Bramhall was a former three-time all-conference outfielder at her alma mater, Muskingum, who most recently was an assistant coach at Ohio Dominican.

W&J TABS DOVE AS NEW MEN'S & WOMEN'S GOLF COACH
Washington & Jefferson College has hired Sean Dove as the Presidents’ new head men’s and women’s golf coach. Dove has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Akron. He replaces Blake Tyson, who resigned after one year in the position.

DAFLER TO CHAIR D-III MEN'S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE
Westminster College Director of Athletics Jim Dafler was recently elected to serve as the chairperson for the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Committee in 2008-09. Dafler, AD at Westminster since 1999, is a former head men's basketball coach for the Titans after previously leading programs at Bethany and Mount Union. He will conclude his four-year term on the committee this year.

THREE W&J MEN'S GOLFERS LAUDED BY GCAA
Three members of Washington & Jefferson's PAC Championship men’s golf team recently earned national honors from the Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) Senior Michael Grasso and junior Marc Fillari were selected to the Cleveland Division III All-America Scholar Team.  In addition, freshman Brad Cieslinski was named to GCAA’s NCAA Division III All-Freshman Team.  He was one of only six freshmen on the national squad. 

PAC TEAMS, ATHLETES EARN USTFCCCA ACADEMIC HONORS
Four track & field teams and seven student-athletes from the PAC have earned academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Waynesburg (3.44 GPA), Westminster (3.171 GPA) and Washington & Jefferson (3.10 GPA) were each named All-Academic Women's Teams for maintaining a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. In addition, six PAC individuals were tabbed to the All-Academic Women's team by posting a 3.25 GPA while meeting an NCAA Division III automatic or provisional qualifying standard: Jessica Cooper, Abbey Basta and Jill Diamond of Westminster; Ashley Dodd and Elisha Jones of Waynesburg; and Kelli Gee of W&J. On the men's side, Westminster (3.035) was the lone men's team represented, while Virgil Marshall of W&J was the lone male individual honored.

GCC'S COURAGE COMPETES AT U.S. OLYMPIC SWIM TRIALS
Grove City College swimming standout Caleb Courage competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., on July 2-4. Courage, who took a year off from Grove City to train for the Olympics, posted a time of 51.80 to finish in 107th place in the 100 meter freestyle on Wednesday, July 2. He then concluded the event with a time of 23.31, good for 68th place, in the 50 meter freestyle on Friday, July 4. The complete Olympic Trials live results for each event are now online.

PAC ANNOUNCES NEW OFFICERS FOR 2008-09 ACADEMIC YEAR; SIMPSON NAMED TO DIVISION III NATIONAL SAAC
The PAC has announced new officers for the 2008-09 academic year, effective July 1, 2008. Dr. Scott Miller, president of Bethany (W.Va.) College, will serve as the chair of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Presidents' Council in the 2008-09 academic year. Bethany AD Tim Weaver and FAR Dr. Wallace Neel will chair the PAC athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives (PAC FARA), respectively. Conor Simpson, a rising senior swimmer at Westminster College, was voted president of the PAC Student-Athlete-Advisory Committee. Simpson has also been selected to represent the PAC and the Capital Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division III national SAAC board.

W&J FOOTBALL EARNS PRESEASON #2 NATIONAL RANKING
The Washington & Jefferson football team is ranked second in the nation by the Sporting News (formerly Street & Smith's) College Football 2008 magazine. The defending PAC champion Presidents have also been ranked fifth in the nation by Lindy's College Football Preview and 20th by USA Today Sports Weekly.
