WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson claimed its ninth Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) baseball title and its fifth under 11th year head coach Jeff Mountain on Saturday afternoon as the top-seeded Presidents posted a 9-3 win over third-seeded Thomas More College at Ross Memorial Park.

The PAC title is the first for W&J since 2009, while Saturday’s victory marks the 300th of Mountain’s career.

The championship tournament title also gives the Presidents the PAC’s automatic berth in next week’s NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. The tournament’s selection show, along with its regional assignments, is scheduled for Monday, May 13 at 10 a.m.

The Presidents, leading 3-0 after one, plated two more in the second on a two-out, two-run triple by junior right fielder Josh Staniscia to push their lead to 5-0. The triple was Staniscia’s second of the season and gave him a school-record 13 for his career. Staniscia attempted to stretch the triple into an inside the park home run, but a terrific relay from senior shortstop David Kennett to sophomore catcher Brad Popham cut him down at the plate to end the inning.

Thomas More responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Senior right fielder Ryan Darner’s two-out, RBI double scored Kennett after his one out walk, and junior center fielder Cody Makin’s run-scoring single brought Darner in from second to trim W&J’s lead to three, 5-2.

Sophomore first baseman Craig Hyson scored on a double play ball hit by freshman pinch hitter Donovan Pogue in the top of the fourth to get the Saints to within two, 5-3.

Junior designated hitter D.J. Michalski’s two-out RBI single scored freshman shortstop Michael Ruffing to push W&J’s lead to three, 6-3, in the sixth. Junior catcher Ronny Peirish led off the seventh with a book rule double and junior third baseman Kyle McLain followed with a double of his own, scoring Peirish and extending W&J’s lead to four, 7-3. Senior center fielder Scott Brady’s sacrifice bunt would score McLain and give the Presidents an 8-3 advantage heading into the eighth.

The Presidents would tack on another score in the bottom of the eighth after Staniscia’s RBI single pushed the President lead to 9-3, the eventual final.

Sophomore starter Tyler Dean earned the championship game win, giving up three runs (3 earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings. The win was Dean’s third of the season.
Peirish finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and run scored while Staniscia went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI.

Sophomore Tyler Jones fell to 1-1 on the year after suffering the loss for the Saints. Jones allowed five runs (5 earned) on six hits with three walks in 4.2 innings.

Kennett finished 3-for-4 with a run while Darner went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a RBI and a run scored.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Third-seeded Thomas More locked up a spot in the tournament’s championship game against top-seeded Washington & Jefferson with its 8-5 elimination game victory over fourth-seeded Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon.

The Saints and Bearcats were deadlocked at four after three innings, but junior center fielder Cody Makin’s two-out, RBI double to right put Thomas More in front 5-4.

A two-out, run-producing single by senior shortstop David Kennett was followed by a run-scoring double off of the bat of junior left fielder Jason Handley to push Thomas More’s lead to 7-4 in the fifth.

Junior right fielder Tanner Master’s RBI single with one out in the sixth pulled Saint Vincent back to within two, 7-5, but an inning-ending double play would subdue the Bearcat rally.

Handley drove in his second run of the day in the seventh with a two-out single to left, putting Thomas More ahead by the eventual final score of 8-5.

Sophomore Tim Baldrick earned the win for the Saints after replacing senior starter David Etscheid in the fourth. Baldrick worked six solid innings in the elimination game, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits and improving to 7-1 on the season.

Saint Vincent junior starter Joey Fearer took the loss, allowing seven runs (6 earned) on nine hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Saints junior third baseman Travis Miller finished 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.

Bearcat senior shortstop Brad Burkardt went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

GAME D
(4) Saint Vincent vs. (2) Thiel – Washington, Pa. | Ross Memorial Park
Saint Vincent 5, Thiel 4   box score

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Bearcats managed to stave off elimination after watching the second-seeded Tomcats jump out to a 1-0 lead after senior designated hitter Jarod Nanna’s RBI single in the second.

Junior first baseman Joey Fearer’s RBI single in the third got things going for the Bearcats in their four-run third inning. Senior catcher Andrew Kozusko’s two-run single, followed by junior left fielder Jordan Britcher’s sacrifice fly, staked the Bearcats to a 4-1 lead.

Thiel senior second baseman Eric King led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left field, trimming Saint Vincent’s lead to two, 4-2.

Saint Vincent junior right fielder Tanner Master’s RBI single the bottom of the frame scored sophomore center fielder Vince Murphy after his two-out double, allowing the Bearcats to reclaim its three-run (5-2) advantage.

Freshman first baseman Trent Smith’s solo home run to lead off the seventh once again brought the Tomcats to within two, 5-3.

Down two with two outs in the top of the ninth, Tomcat sophomore Trent Mosley’s pinch hit, RBI double cut Saint Vincent’s lead to down to one, 5-4. Mosley was the last batter faced by Saint Vincent senior starter Jared Haller, who improved to 6-3 with Friday’s win. Haller allowed four runs (4 earned) on 11 hits with seven strikeouts in 8.2 innings.

Senior Gary Gerhardt entered in relief of Haller after going 5.2 innings in Thursday’s 14-3 loss to W&J. Gerhardt gave up a two-out single to Tomcat sophomore shortstop Cody Trinch before striking out freshman catcher Dan Koller to end the game.

Senior starter Cody Northcott took the loss for the Tomcats, giving up five runs (5 earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Trinch finished 3-for-4 while Koller, Smith and senior third baseman Nick Rossmiller each finished with a pair of hits.

Fearer and Master each had a pair of hits for the Bearcats.

GAME C

Washington & Jefferson 10, Thomas More 1   box score

WASHINGTON, Pa. – In Friday’s opener top-seeded Washington & Jefferson scored as visitors on the scoreboard while being relegated to the first base dugout, but the host Presidents ran their home record this season to 18-0 after posting a 10-1 victory over third-seeded Thomas More.

Thomas More senior Grant Lewis worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the first, giving up just a single run in the frame.

A run-scoring sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Tyler Schultz in the top of the fourth gave the Presidents a 2-0 lead after junior catcher Ronny Peirish reached on a throwing error to get the inning underway.

A RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman Craig Hyson in the fourth scored junior center fielder Cody Makin after his leadoff double to pull the Saints back to within one, 2-1.

Lewis managed to wiggle out of a bases-loaded, nobody out situation in the top of the fifth thanks to a stellar defensive play by freshman second baseman Marcus Woelfel. After walking the leadoff batter, hitting the second and allowing the third to reach on a throwing error, Lewis induced a pair of strikeouts prior to Woelfel robbing junior third baseman Kyle McLain of a run-producing hit to end the inning.

A two-out RBI single by freshman shortstop Michael Ruffing in the sixth scored Schultz to give the Presidents back a two-run lead, 3-1.

After inheriting a two-on, one-out situation in the seventh, sophomore reliever Jared Baird got senior shortstop David Kennett to pop up before striking out junior left fielder Jason Handley to quell the Thomas More threat.

Schultz’s RBI single in the eighth scored Peirish to get the Presidents’ five-run eighth underway by advancing W&J’s lead to 4-1. Junior Andy Roenker relieved Lewis with one out in the eighth, and after a run-producing sacrifice fly by Ruffing pushed the Presidents lead to 5-1, senior second baseman Scott Liller’s two-out, two-run base hit staked W&J to a 7-1 advantage. The Presidents would extend their lead to 8-1 after junior designated hitter D.J. Michalski’s RBI double.

W&J would add a pair of runs on sacrifice flies in the top of the ninth to push its lead to the eventual final of 10-1.

The Presidents’ five sacrifice flies in the game tied the standing NCAA Division III single-game record, which was previously set by Rutgers University-Camden vs. Lincoln University (Apr 9, 2002) and Colby-Sawyer College vs. Anna Maria College (Apr 11, 2000).

Lewis took the loss for Thomas More (5-2), giving up seven runs (2 earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Handley went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Junior starter Brian O’Neill provided the Presidents with their second quality start in as many days after allowing just one run (1 earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Baird secured his second save of the season by tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Presidents sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and broke the game open after scoring nine and pushing their lead to 12-2.
