CMU's Benger named ECAC South Offensive Player of the Week

DANBURY, Conn. (pacathletics.org) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomore running back Sam Benger (Hingham, Mass.) was named the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday.

 Benger turned in a record-setting effort in Carnegie Mellon's 38-14 home loss to W&J, rushing for a school-record 303 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, while averaging 14.4 yards per touch. The sophomore scored on runs of 51 and 85 yards and had additional runs of 46 and 66 yards.

Benger's 303 yards topped Mike Monsilovich's mark of 207 against Alfred on September 29, 1998. He totaled 220 yards and 13 carries in Saturday's first half. He currently leads all NCAA Division III counterparts in rushing average with 253.5 yards per game and in all-purpose yards with 261.5 yards per game.

Carnegie Mellon (0-2, 0-1 PAC) travels to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Geneva College (2-1, 1-0 PAC) on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff at Reeves Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
