Several PAC wrestlers
are either ranked or
being recognized at the national level by D3 Wrestle.com.
Waynesburg's Corbin Semple is ranked No. 5 in the
184-pound class, while teammate Nick Garber is ranked No.
9 in the 133-pound class. Honorable mentions include
Waynesburg's Alex Crown (125) and Alex Evanoff
(165), as well as Wash. & Jeff.'s Dominck Demor (157).
Thiel's Alec Miller is listed as a "contender" to break
into the rankings at 165 pounds.

Waynesburg junior wrestlers
Nick Garber and Corbin Semple are ranked among
the best in Division III by the
National Wrestling Caches Association (NWCA). Garber is
listed No. 4 in the 141-pound category with an 11-2 record and a
4-0 record in dual matches. Semple is ranked No. 8 in the
184-pound category; he earned his ranking following two wins
versus nationally-ranked opponents at the Rochester Institute of
Technology (RIT) Invitational last Saturday, Dec. 5.

Waynesburg University head wrestling coach Ron Headlee
will be inducted into the Washington/ Greene Chapter of the
Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on June 11-12.

HONORS TO LEAD PAC CONTINGENT AT NCAA D-III NATIONALS
Four PAC wrestlers represented the conference at the
2009 NCAA Division
III Wrestling National Championships, held in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa on March 6-7. Leading the quartet was 133-pound freshman
Corey Brown from PAC champion Thiel. Brown, the 2009 PAC
Wrestler of the Year,
earned NCAA Division III All-America honors with a
sixth-place finish. Brown's Tomcat teammate, 125-pounder Rob
Miller, went 0-2 at the meet, dropping a 5-4 decision in the
opening round before being eliminated via injury default.
A pair of Waynesburg wrestlers fared well at the event.
Sophomore 141-pounder Nick Garber and freshman
197-pounder Corbin Semple combined to win three of their
first four matches before being eliminated late on Friday night.

FOUR FROM PAC HEADED TO D-III
NATIONALS
The PAC will be represented by four conference wrestlers
this weekend at the
2009
NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa on March 6-7.
Waynesburg will be represented by sophomore Nick Garber
and freshman Corbin Semple at 141 and 197 pounds,
respectively. Both Garber and Semple captured regional
titles on February 21.
PAC champion Thiel will be represented by
125-pounder Rob Miller and 133-pounder Corey Brown,
who both placed second at the Midwest Regionals. Brown was named
the 2009 PAC MVP after capturing the 133-pound title with a pair
of wins, including a thrilling 10-9 decision over Garber, at the
PAC Championships on Feb. 14.

TITLES
Two Waynesburg University wrestlers captured weight class
titles at the
NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by
Trine University in Angola, Ind., this weekend.
Yellow Jacket standouts Nick Garber and Corbin Semple
won titles at 141 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively,
to become the first Waynesburg wrestlers to advance to the NCAA
Division III National Championships since Shawn Whyte in
2001. In team competition, PAC champion Thiel finished in fifth
place with 97.5 points, followed by Waynesburg in sixth (83.5)
and Washington & Jefferson in 11th (39.5).
THIEL CONTINUES PAC DOMINATION;
TOMCATS CAPTURE 10TH STRAIGHT TITLE, SWEEP AWARDS
Thiel College captured its 10th consecutive PAC wrestling title
on February 14 at the 2009 PAC Wrestling
Championships, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College in
Washington, Pa. The Matcats captured six of the 10 weight class
finals and finished with 125 points to easily outdistance Waynesburg
(88) and W&J (63) in team competition. Freshman 133-pounder Corey
Brown of Thiel was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, while
veteran Tomcat mentor Craig Thurber garnered Coach of the
Year laurels.
WAYNESBURG TABS LOCAL DUO FOR
PROGRAM
Waynesburg hired
Ron Headlee as head wrestling coach on February 15. He
will assume the head coaching duties following next weekend’s
competition at the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Crawfordsville, Ind.
Joining Headlee on the Yellow Jackets’ coaching staff will be
John Yates, with whom Headlee worked as an assistant at
Waynesburg Central High School in recent years.
THIEL ROLLS TO NINTH
STRAIGHT PAC TITLE
The Thiel College Matcats
continued their recent domination of Presidents’ Athletic Conference
(PAC) wrestling, as they captured their ninth consecutive PAC team
title and 16th in the past 18 years at the 2008 PAC championships on
February 13. The Tomcats captured six of the 10 weight classes en
route to 145.5 points, easily topping W&J (105.5) and host
Waynesburg (58). Freshman Nick Garber from Waynesburg was
named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament after capturing the
141-pound title with a pair of pin fall victories. Coach of the Year
honors went to Washington & Jefferson head coach Jay Robison.
